Our office was awarded the tender to carry out the alterations and additions to the existing Sporting Pavilion in Banyule Flats. The original building was designed under a glass landscape roof and covered with a walkway and viewing platform. The project involved a total building strip-out, major refurbishment of the existing pavilion and all its services and an extension by adding a new social hall, commercial kitchen, amenities, storage & landscaping and an extension to the building, creating a dramatic green form, defining the entrance to the facility.

The brief needed to meet the growing demand and diverse needs of the local community, including boosting opportunities for women’s participation in sport.

Environmental Sustainable Design (ESD) was a key driver throughout the project. Passive heating, cooling & natural ventilation is achieved into all change rooms & social areas while the community space has dual orientation for northern aspect & flexible community use. Rain water gardens, low VOC materials, rain water tanks & water efficient fixtures are all integrated throughout.

Featuring 4 change rooms, a social space, umpires areas, office, kitchen / Kiosk, storage spaces & amenities, the design balances an array of subtleties for a large scale facility in a popular parklands environment with selected muted and tones to reflect the landscaped surround.
